چکیده

While much has been written about the probabilities referenced in Plantinga’s Evolutionary Argument Against Naturalism, insufficient attention paid to question of how these are be interpreted. In this paper, I demonstrate that objective interpretations entail denial traditional theism, making them unsuitable for purpose here. With respect epistemic interpretations, note standard Bayesianism is too permissive purposes. then argue use Principle Indifference at odds with his Reformed Epistemology. conclude some suggestions defenders argument might proceed.

Plantinga’s Probability Arguments Against Evolutionary Naturalism

In Chapter 12 of Warrant and Proper Function, Alvin Plantinga constructs two arguments against evolutionary naturalism, which he construes as a conjunction E&N . The hypothesis E says that “human cognitive faculties arose by way of the mechanisms to which contemporary evolutionary thought directs our attention (p. 220).” With respect to proposition N , Plantinga (p. 270) says “it isn’t easy to ...

Astrophysical Fine Tuning, Naturalism, and the Contemporary Design Argument

Evidence for instances of astrophysical ‘fine tuning’ (or ‘coincidences’) is thought by some to lend support to the design argument (i.e. the argument that our universe has been designed by some deity). We assess some of the relevant empirical and conceptual issues. We argue that astrophysical fine tuning calls for some explanation, but this explanation need not appeal to the design argument. A...

Interpreting the Validity of a High-Stakes Test in Light of the Argument-Based Framework: Implications for Test Improvement

The validity of large-scale assessments may be compromised, partly due to their content inappropriateness or construct underrepresentation. Few validity studies have focused on such assessments within an argument-based framework. This study analyzed the domain description and evaluation inference of the Ph.D. Entrance Exam of ELT (PEEE) sat by Ph.D. examinees (n = 999) in 2014 in Iran....

Against the Vagueness Argument

In this paper I offer a counterexample to the so called vagueness argument against restricted composition. This will be done in the lines of a recent suggestion by Trenton Merricks, namely by challenging the claim that there cannot be a sharp cut-off point in a composition sequence. It will be suggested that causal powers which emerge when composition occurs can serve as an indicator of such sh...

Interpreting Evolutionary Trees

Content: Evolutionary Trees Evolutionary tree diagrams are branching diagrams (dendrograms) that depict the phylogenetic relationships between taxa based on shared derived characters (synapomorphies) that reflect common ancestry. Phylogenies depict an historical pattern of divergence and descent as series of branches; these branches merge at points representing common ancestry, which in turn ar...
